He also announced that the National Security Council would convene within 48 hours.
President Karol Nawrocki spoke after an emergency meeting of the National Security Bureau (BBN) in Warsaw attended by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, defence officials and top military commanders.
The talks focused on the unprecedented scale of the airspace breach and the need for urgent action, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
'A moment without precedent in NATO history'
“What happened last night is a moment without precedent in NATO’s history, as well as in Poland’s recent history,” Nawrocki told reporters. “We must draw full consequences from this.”
Article 4 of the NATO treaty allows any member to request urgent consultations when it believes its territorial integrity, political independence or security is under threat.
Nawrocki thanked Polish pilots, soldiers and NATO allies for their role in shooting down drones that posed a direct danger.
“We proved that within the alliance we can respond to such situations effectively,” he said, adding that Poland must strengthen its counter-drone defences in close cooperation with NATO.
He announced that the armed forces chief, Gen. Wiesław Kukuła, would deliver a full report within 48 hours.
The president said the upcoming National Security Council meeting will bring together political leaders and parliamentary group heads to review the incident and consider measures to prevent similar events in the future.
Poland’s military confirmed that multiple Russian drones crossed into its airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine overnight. Those deemed a threat were shot down, officials said, with no casualties reported.
National Security Bureau head Sławomir Cenckiewicz called the incident “without precedent” and urged the public to rely only on official communications, warning against disinformation efforts.
He added that while Poland’s military modernisation is ongoing, full operational capacity will take years, making allied cooperation essential.
The National Security Council serves as an advisory body to the president and includes senior officials such as the Speakers of both houses of parliament, the prime minister, the defence, interior and foreign ministers, and other prominent politicians from both the government and opposition.
