“The services responsible for Poland’s security are continuously monitoring the situation around critical maritime infrastructure, including areas beyond the territorial waters of the Republic of Poland,” the statement added.
According to TVN24, citing Second Lieutenant Katarzyna Przybysz of the Maritime Border Guard Unit, the incident occurred on September 19 in the afternoon hours, but no violation of the state border took place.
The Petrobaltic platform, owned by the Orlen Group, operates in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea and is a production installation used for the exploitation of oil and gas deposits beneath the seabed. Its location is several dozen kilometers north of Rozewie, in northern Poland.
The flyover of the fighter aircraft was recorded at an altitude of approximately 150 meters, confirmed Karolina Gałecka, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior and Administration.
According to the Polish Border Guard, “the security zone of the platform was violated. The Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland and other relevant services were notified.”
Estonia triggers NATO Article 4 consultations over Russian airspace violation
Earlier on Friday, reports indicated that three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated the airspace over the Gulf of Finland near Vaindloo Island in northern Estonia and remained in that territory for around 12 minutes.
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tallinn confirmed that it summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires and presented him with a formal protest note.
“Such a violation is totally unacceptable. The Government of Estonia has decided to request NATO Article 4 consultations,” Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal announced in a post on X, referring to the provision that allows NATO members to consult when any ally’s security is perceived to be threatened.
Poland and EU condemn Russia’s airspace violation, pledge solidarity with Estonia
Commenting on the incident, Polish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski stated that “Russia is once again provoking and showing that it is not interested in peace” and assured that “Poland declares solidarity with Estonia and firmly condemns the violation of its airspace by Russia.”
A similar position was taken by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission:
“Europe stands with Estonia in the face of Russia’s latest violation of our airspace. We will respond to every provocation with determination while investing in a stronger Eastern flank. As threats escalate, so too will our pressure.I call on EU leaders to swiftly approve our 19th sanctions package,” she added.
European Council President António Costa also expressed solidarity with Estonia, calling the Russian airspace violation unacceptable and saying the EU will address its response at the informal European Council meeting in Copenhagen on 1 October.
