A recent conference in Warsaw explored how these memories are being kept alive, challenged or reinterpreted—from local communities preserving stories of persecution to governments and activists redefining their nations’ pasts amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.

As countries across the region go through processes of decolonization and seek to distance themselves from Russian influence, much of the research on the legacy of Soviet rule is being conducted in Central and Eastern Europe.

Scholars from Western Europe, however, are also showing growing interest in the subject.
