Lewandowski traveled to the United States for the event and called the honor “a great distinction,” saying he always represents his homeland wherever he plays.
“It’s a great privilege for all Poles that we can celebrate our independence. I’m very happy to be here,” he said.
Consul Mateusz Sakowicz said Lewandowski serves as a captain not only on the pitch but “for 10 million Poles and Polish Americans in the United States.”
The consulate said the skyscraper was last illuminated in Poland’s national colors for the Pulaski Parade in 2008.
