Lewandowski traveled to the United States for the event and called the honor “a great distinction,” saying he always represents his homeland wherever he plays.

“It’s a great privilege for all Poles that we can celebrate our independence. I’m very happy to be here,” he said on Monday night.

Consul Mateusz Sakowicz said Lewandowski serves as a role model not only on the pitch but "for the 10 million Poles and Polish Americans in the United States."

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, the day World War I ended, after 123 years of partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia.

The consulate said the skyscraper was previously illuminated in Poland’s national colors for the Pulaski Parade in 2008.
