On Thursday, Nawrocki vetoed two bills: amendments to the electoral code and changes to the law governing the taxation of family foundations.

The president also called on the government and Prime Minister Donald Tusk to consult with him “at an early stage” on draft legislation, suggesting that this would improve the legislative process and reduce the need for vetoes.

Responding on social media on Friday, Sikorski rejected the president’s suggestion, writing that there is no legal basis for such a requirement.

“The president would like the government to ask for his approval to proceed with legislation, in the same way President Duda wanted me to seek permission on ambassadorial appointments. There is no legal foundation for this. One should have read the constitution before deciding to run for office,” Sikorski wrote.

The dispute highlights escalating tensions between Poland’s government and the presidential office over the handling of awards and promotions.

Earlier, on Thursday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused President Nawrocki of “sabotaging national security” by blocking promotions for junior security officers and refusing medals to personnel involved in countering foreign-backed sabotage.

The president’s office insists that only fully documented nominations demonstrating exemplary service can be approved.

Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has warned that, through actions exceeding his authority and contrary to Polish law, President Nawrocki could face proceedings before the State Tribunal.
