Poland's president has signed a decree prolonging the mission of Polish soldiers in Turkey, as well as in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions.
The European Unions EUNavFor Med Irini operation in the Mediterranean Sea, launched in 2020, focuses on enforcing a United Nations arms embargo on Libya using aerial, maritime and satellite assets. Polish troops contribute mainly through aerial reconnaissance and by providing training and advisory support to allied forces, according to officials.

Under the decision, the mission of a 96-member Polish military contingent in Turkey will be extended until June 30, 2026, as part of NATO’s adjusted Assurance Measures, state news agency PAP reported.

The contingent's area of operations includes Turkey, the eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The troops are tasked with gathering and sharing information in the region, including through patrol and reconnaissance flights, and providing reports to NATO’s Allied Maritime Command, according to officials.

Nawrocki also extended until December 31, 2026 the deployment of an 80-member Polish military contingent taking part in the European Union’s naval mission EUNavFor Med Irini.

Under Polish law, the president authorises foreign troop deployments at the request of the government or prime minister.

Poland currently has troops deployed in about a dozen international missions, including NATO operations on the alliance's eastern flank in Romania and Latvia, as well as stabilisation missions in the Middle East, the Balkans and maritime patrols in the Mediterranean.
