Kosiniak-Kamysz was responding to remarks by President Karol Nawrocki, who said Sunday that Poland should pursue the development of its nuclear potential while respecting international regulations.
The defense minister said issues such as NATO’s Nuclear Sharing program and a nuclear umbrella are “always the subject of alliance analyses and joint decisions.” He added that he welcomed openness from France on nuclear deterrence, a topic raised in 2025 by French President Emmanuel Macron.
“I am also in favor of developing our own research and development capabilities,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said, adding that on nuclear matters “it is better to achieve results than just have dreams.”
He described nuclear weapons as “the most sensitive of sensitive topics,” requiring “care, reliability and action, not big public debates.”
Poland ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1969, which bars nuclear-armed states from transferring such weapons to non-nuclear states and commits signatories to halt nuclear tests.
