The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon in the Mięguszowiecka Valley.

Rescuers received reports of two skiers buried in snow and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene.

Bystanders managed to dig the first man out before emergency services arrived and immediately began CPR, but he could not be saved.

The second skier was located using an avalanche detector – his injuries also proved fatal.

Slovakia's Mountain Rescue Service, Horská Záchranná Služba, has warned that avalanche risk in the High and Western Tatras remains at level three out of five.

Several large avalanches have occurred spontaneously in recent days, and warmer temperatures and sunny weather are expected to make conditions deteriorate further.

The service is urging people to avoid steep slopes and the terrain below them.
