Prime Minister Donald Tusk welcomed the figures in a video message this week, saying that Poland had joined Europe's "economic elite."

"Poland has just overtaken Spain in income per capita," Tusk said. "We’re now part of Europe’s economic elite."

The new data highlight Poland’s rapid economic growth in recent years and its narrowing gap with some Western European economies.
