State-owned company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) submitted a construction permit application to the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA), officials said on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the news before cabinet meeting, describing it as significant progress.

The application runs to more than 40,000 pages of project documentation.

The plant is to be built in Choczewo in the Pomerania region, and will consist of three reactor units using Westinghouse AP1000 technology, constructed by the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium.

The first unit is expected to begin commercial operation in 2036, with the remaining two following by 2038.

Construction is due to start in 2028.

The PAA now has two years to consider the application.

PEJ president Marek Woszczyk called Tuesday "one of the most important days" in the project's history, noting it is the first such application submitted in Poland since 1989.
