Poland summons Russian ambassador over missile incident

Poland's foreign ministry summoned Russia's ambassador to Warsaw on Friday after a suspected Russian missile came down on Polish territory the previous day.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on social media that Ambassador Georgy Mikhno had been handed a note of protest.

Foreign ministry spokesman Maciej Wewiór said the note was delivered by deputy foreign minister and national security adviser Robert Kupiecki, and that the ambassador had been told Poland "unequivocally condemns hostile actions aimed at the security of a sovereign state and its citizens."

Poland demanded an end to actions "that endanger the life and safety of Polish citizens and risk an aviation disaster," Wewiór said.

"We stressed that any escalation on the border of the EU and NATO is unacceptable," the spokesman added.

The missile, believed to be a Kh-101, came down on Thursday in Poland's eastern Lubelskie region.

Speaking briefly to reporters as he left the ministry, Mikhno said the conversation had been conducted in a "highly likely" style, "as always," on the Polish side.

Asked whether he could confirm a Russian missile had fallen on Polish territory on Thursday, he replied simply: "No."
