Tusk posted a video on the X platform urging people to support the image of the Polish Nobel laureate, which is one of the options under consideration for the upcoming redesign of euro banknotes.
“Listen, let’s vote — it’s high time. This time not for a political party, but for Maria Skłodowska‑Curie, because she could end up on the 20‑euro banknote,” he said.
He added that “a lot depends on our vote,” announcing that he had already cast his own.
Public input on the theme for the new euro banknotes remains open until September 21. If the cultural theme is selected, Skłodowska‑Curie will appear on the 20‑euro note.
If the nature theme wins, the banknote will feature the European bee‑eater instead. The ECB will announce its final decision at the end of the year.
Since the euro entered circulation in 2002, banknotes have featured a single architectural theme, with gateways, windows, and bridges symbolizing European architectural styles across seven historical periods.
The current 20‑euro note depicts a Gothic‑style window.
