Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz collected the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord from Spain's King Felipe VI at a ceremony in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo on Friday, Poland’s PAP news agency reported.

The Spanish head of state was quoted as saying during the ceremony that the Polish Baltic port city was an "example of solidarity, integration and peaceful coexistence."

Previous winners in the same category included the German city of Berlin and Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust remembrance centre, the Polish news agency reported.

The annual Princess of Asturias awards, known as the “Nobel Prizes” of the Spanish-speaking world, are given out to individuals and organisations from all around the world who make significant achievements in areas such as the sciences, arts, literature, humanities and sports.

Prizewinners this year included British film and theatre director Peter Brook, American biologist Joanne Chory and Argentine ecologist Sandra Myrna Díaz, in addition to American skier Lindsey Vonn, who picked up the prize in the Sport category.

Last year Polish mountain climber Krzysztof Wielicki won the Princess of Asturias Award for Sport, sharing the prize with Italian climber Reinhold Messner.

Meanwhile, Polish poet Adam Zagajewski won the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature in 2017.
