A 23-strong team of doctors, nurses and paramedics from the Polish Center for International Aid (PCPM) aims to share its experience in battling the COVID-19 disease amid the pandemic.
According to the Polish foreign ministry, the team's three-week mission is intended “to share knowledge on how to fight the disease with local medical personnel and to support the local healthcare system, in particular hospitals … across Tajikistan.”
Dr. Wojciech Wilk, head of the Polish Center for International Aid, said that Tajikistan was reporting COVID-19 infections in all its regions.
He added that the Polish medics were equipped to tackle the disease in the central Asian nation “regardless of the conditions.”
“We are ready to work in both the hot climate of the Fergana Basin and areas high in the Pamir Mountains in the east of the country,” Wilk was quoted as saying.
Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński said the Polish medical mission to Tajikistan was “an expression of solidarity with developing countries” and part of Poland’s policy of providing development assistance to countries in need.
According to the Polish foreign ministry, Poland provides international aid “through various efforts, including humanitarian and development projects, medical research (including research into vaccines), provision of medical supplies and disinfectants as well as the assistance of medical teams.”
Poland’s “financial commitment amounts to close to PLN 500 million [EUR 113 million, USD 127 million] in total,” the Polish foreign ministry said on its website.
The Tajikistan trip follows a recent stay by Polish medics in Kyrgyzstan and a lifesaving mission to Italy’s Lombardy region.
