Błaszczak said in a tweet on Wednesday that he and Austin talked about "security issues in the region, in particular in Ukraine" during their phone call.

He added that the conversation also focused on efforts to modernize Poland's armed forces.

"The Pentagon chief accepted my invitation to visit Poland," Błaszczak also said in his Twitter post.

Meanwhile, Austin tweeted that his country's "continuing close security relationship with Poland is critical to deterrence along NATO's Eastern Flank."

Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby said in a statement that Austin and Błaszczak spoke to discuss "Russia’s ongoing, unprovoked military build-up around Ukraine."

He added that "both leaders expressed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and their continuing commitment to build the defensive capabilities of Ukraine’s forces."

Austin and Błaszczak "also exchanged views on enhancing deterrence along NATO’s Eastern Flank, highlighted the importance of maintaining NATO unity, and agreed to continue their close cooperation at this critical time," according to the statement.
