Polish president, Canadian PM discuss Russian threat to Ukraine

Polish President Andrzej Duda and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have spoken on the phone to discuss security concerns in Eastern Europe and ways to defuse the West's standoff with Russia over Ukraine, according to officials.

The Polish president said in a tweet on Sunday: "Much appreciated conversation with Justin TrudeauPoland and Canada continue their efforts and remain dedicated to territorial integrity and wellbeing of Ukraine, as well as freedom and democracy in Belarus."

He added: "We are on the same page on where the threats to the stability of the region come from." 

Meanwhile, Trudeau's office said in a statement that the Canadian prime minister spoke with Poland's Duda on Sunday "to discuss security concerns in Eastern Europe."

Duda and Trudeau "discussed their shared concerns about the continuing buildup of Russian military forces in and around Ukraine, as well as Russia’s ongoing aggression and destabilization activities," the statement said.

It added that Trudeau "reaffirmed Canada’s steadfast support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and emphasized that any further military incursion into Ukraine would have serious consequences, including coordinated sanctions."

The two leaders "emphasized the importance of coordination and unity among allies" and "exchanged views on how best to support Ukraine, and both commented on the courage and determination of the Ukrainian people, especially in the face of continuing Russian military buildup along their borders," according to the statement.

Duda and Trudeau on Friday attended an online meeting with US President Joe Biden and the leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Romania as well as the heads of NATO and the European Union.

The Polish president said after the meeting that the West stood united and in solidarity with Ukraine amid a looming threat of Russian aggression.
