The recommendation will be made at the next European Council summit on June 23-24, Polish state news agency PAP reported on Wednesday, citing Ukraine’s Ukrinform news agency.

According to the German MEP David Mc Allister, the EU’s lawmakers will call for Ukraine to be supplied with relevant weaponry as it fights the Russian invasion, as well as to be formally declared a candidate to join the EU.

“We recommend that Ukraine be provided, without delay, with weapons in line with the needs expressed by the Ukrainian authorities and be granted EU candidate status as a clear political sign of solidarity with the people of Ukraine,” McAllister said, as quoted by PAP.

The European Parliament will also recommend comprehensive monitoring of EU sanctions against Russia, and of the implementation of these sanctions, the Ukrinform news agency reported.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki have been vocal in appealing to the EU to grant Ukraine candidate status.

Wednesday is day 105 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
