Polish PM heads to Brussels for EU summit

Poland’s prime minister will travel to Brussels on Thursday for a two-day European Union summit that is expected to focus on support for Ukraine and EU membership applications from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.

Mateusz Morawiecki and fellow EU leaders will also meet with the leaders of the Western Balkan countries, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Piotr Müller, the spokesman for the Polish government, told reporters: “The European Council will discuss the current situation in Ukraine, including further economic, military, financial and humanitarian assistance.”  

He added that EU leaders meeting in Brussels would "explore the implementation of the bloc’s sanctions" against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.

The summit is also expected to discuss international efforts to alleviate the food crisis caused by the war, Müller said. 

Moreover, EU leaders will hold talks on the EU membership applications from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia, he added.

“The European Commission has recommended that the bloc grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova,” Müller noted.

Sanctions on Russia, EU candidate status for Ukraine

Referring to the Polish stance for the summit, Müller said: “Poland stresses the need to maintain growing sanctions pressure on Russia in response to its aggression, as well as provide technical, military, political and diplomatic support to Ukraine, including a perspective for Ukraine to join the EU and to be rebuilt after the war.”

Müller also told reporters that Poland would call on the EU to support Warsaw’s efforts to help Ukraine export its grain after Russia cut off its main supply routes

Partners in Africa, the Middle East and Asia "must be informed that Russia is destroying, stealing and blocking Ukraine’s grain exports" and "is therefore solely responsible for the food crisis," Müller said. 

Thursday is day 120 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
