As we reported last week, several NATO allies were quick to distance themselves from Macron's suggestion of sending western troops to Ukraine. This has appeared thus far to be a line in the sand Ukraine's allies are not willing to cross - along with the refusal to facilitate attacks on Russian territory.

Putin himself responded by threatening nuclear escalation if the western allies sent troops.

However, in the mean time Russian outlets appear to have obtained recordings of a German commander describing the aid British soldiers are giving Ukraine on the ground.

Rishi Sunak has now acknowledged that there are indeed a "small number" of British troops on the ground supporting Ukraine, consistent with several other reports:

Christoph Bluth, Professor of International Relations and Security at the University of Bradford, writing for The Conversation, suggests that this support from the UK is in line with international law as Ukraine was unjustly attacked by Russia and the UK is aiding its defence. Furthermore, he says this means any country supplying Russia with weapons stands in violation of international law.
