Poland’s foreign minister, Radosław Sikorski, announced the decision on Monday, accusing Russian intelligence services of orchestrating an arson attack on a shopping center in Warsaw.
In response, Russia’s foreign ministry condemned the move as “inadequate” and warned of an “adequate response to inadequate actions.”
Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Poland of “deliberately destroying bilateral ties” and acting “against the interests of its own citizens,” according to a state-run news agency.
"Many different accusations against Russia are voiced in Poland, this is part of an absolutely Russophobic and unfriendly position towards our country," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, reacting to Poland's move.
"Moreover, all these accusations are always absolutely groundless," he added.
This is the second such closure in recent months, following the shutdown of the Russian consulate in Poznań over similar allegations.
Once the Kraków mission closes, Russia will maintain only its embassy in Warsaw and a consulate in Gdańsk.
Poland, in turn, has an embassy in Moscow and consulates in Irkutsk and Kaliningrad, after its mission in St. Petersburg was shut down in a previous round of Russian reprisals.
