EU chief congratulates winner of Polish presidential election

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has congratulated Poland's newly elected president and voiced hope for continued strong cooperation between Warsaw and Brussels.

"I’m confident that the EU will continue its very good cooperation with Poland," European Commision President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Monday morning on her official account on X (formerly Twitter).

"We are all stronger together in our community of peace, democracy, and values. So let us work to ensure the security and prosperity of our common home," she added.

According to official results from Poland's National Electoral Commission, Karol Nawrocki, the right-wing candidate backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, won the presidential runoff election on Sunday with 50.89 percent of the vote.

He narrowly defeated pro-European Civic Coalition (KO) candidate and Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, who received 49.11 percent.

Voter turnout stood at 71.63 percent.
