South Korea’s new center-left president, Lee Jae-myung, has been sworn into office just one day after securing a narrow election victory. The swift transition of power was made possible by the recent impeachment and removal from office of his predecessor, Yoon Suk-yeol.

Lee, a member of the ruling liberal Democratic Party, won nearly 50% of the vote.

In his inaugural address, he pledged to stabilize South Korea’s economy and to work toward healing a deeply divided society. Domestic polarization has intensified in recent months, particularly following Yoon’s dramatic ousting.

Strengthening South Korea’s international standing was also among Lee’s key promises. “Restoring trust at home and abroad is essential,” he said.

Despite his win, Lee faces a politically charged environment. The conservative opposition, aligned with the impeached former president, still enjoys the support of over 40% of the electorate.

Lee also reaffirmed Seoul’s commitment to its long-standing alliance with the United States.
