Trump wrote on social media that the 75-minute call covered “the attack on Russia’s docked airplanes […] and also various other attacks that have been taking place by both sides,” adding that the conversation was good, but not one that will bring immediate peace.

Earlier in the day, the Kremlin warned that “military options are on the table” after strikes deep inside Russia and urged the United States and Britain to rein in Kyiv, accusations both Western governments denied.

Trump said Putin “very strongly” indicated a retaliatory move was inevitable after the weekend raids, which Ukrainian officials hailed as proof they can hit back more than three years into the war.

Iran on the agenda

The two leaders also discussed Iran, with Trump telling reporters that Putin signaled a willingness to join negotiations on a new nuclear accord.

“I stated to President Putin that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and, on this, I believe that we were in agreement,” Trump said, accusing Tehran of “slow-walking” the talks.

No quick path to peace

Despite calling the exchange constructive, Trump said it will “not lead to immediate Peace [sic]”, underscoring the widening gulf between Moscow and Kyiv as Russian forces weigh their response and Ukraine presses for more Western weapons.
