The special-forces unit Cobra swept the building after reports of shots shortly after midday. Officers later found the suspected attacker’s body in a bathroom, Interior Ministry spokesperson Iris Fialka told ORF television.

“Kronen Zeitung” and other outlets said the death toll could rise above 9. Police said a precise figure would follow once families were notified.

A motive was not confirmed, but the tabloid cited investigators as saying the teenager felt bullied by classmates.

Authorities declared the situation under control by early afternoon and said there was no further threat. Paramedics set up triage points outside, while students were led to nearby buses.

Austria has tight gun laws; despite that, it boasts one of Europe's most heavily armed populations with an estimated 30 firearms for every 100 people, according to The Guardian.

But mass shootings are rare; the daily reported, citing two incidents, in 2020 and 1997, which left, respectively, 4 and 6 people killed.
