The Trump administration is preparing to send thousands of foreign nationals now in US custody to the Guantánamo Bay detention facility without notifying their home governments, a report by The Washington Post cited US officials as saying.

The draft plan allegedly covers nationals from Poland, Britain, France, Germany, and other European partners, as well as Turkey, Ukraine and Haiti, the officials cited by the daily said.

About 9,000 detainees are undergoing medical screening to determine fitness for transfer.

A document reviewed by the paper states that the infamous facility “is not at capacity”; the move aims to relieve overcrowded domestic facilities as President Donald Trump pursues the largest deportation drive in U.S. history.

The Washington Post said that several home countries have offered to repatriate their citizens, but not quickly enough for U.S. immigration hardliners, who are pushing for at least 3,000 arrests a day, according to recent White House statements.

Trump in January floated sending up to 30,000 migrants to Guantánamo, but only a few hundred were ever moved there and later flown back to Louisiana.

Later on Wednesday, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt denied The Washington Post's reports.

"This story is Fake News [sic]. Not happening," Leavitt wrote on the X platform. She did not provide any further explanation.

The alleged expansion is expected to spark backlash from allies concerned about Guantánamo’s reputation for past abuses of terrorism suspects. The facility, opened in 2002, previously held Cuban and Haitian migrants intercepted at sea.
