Israel’s military said on Tuesday it had killed Brigadier-General Ali Shadmani, head of Iran’s newly formed Supreme Joint Headquarters, during overnight air-strikes on Tehran – only four days after he was promoted to the post.

Shadmani oversaw both the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s regular army. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the raid was enabled by “precise intelligence” and described the general as a key architect of Iranian operations against the Jewish state. Iranian state media confirmed his death.

Iran launches new missiles at Israel

Hours after the announcement, air-raid sirens sounded across central and northern Israel as Iran launched what the IDF estimated to be around 20 ballistic missiles, the latest retaliation in a week-long exchange.

Explosions and fires were reported near Tel Aviv and in the outskirts of Jerusalem. Emergency crews said there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Escalating cycle

Israel opened its air campaign on 13 June, saying it aimed to cripple Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure.

Tehran called the strikes a “declaration of war” and has twice responded with long-range missile barrages. Israeli officials say 24 civilians have been killed in Iran’s attacks; Iran’s health ministry puts its own death toll from Israeli raids at 224.

Both governments vow further action even as G7 leaders and the United Nations urge de-escalation and a return to nuclear talks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week Iran had enough enriched uranium for nine nuclear bombs; Tehran has repeatedly denied seeking atomic weapons.
