Speaking to reporters at the NATO summit in The Hague, FM Sikorski said the draft communiqué made it clear that consensus on the goal was 'essentially secured.'

During the summit, the head of Polish diplomacy also took part in a panel at the NATO Public Forum, where he stressed the importance of sustained defence investment.

'The closer you are to Russia, the more you spend,' he said. 'Poland has learned over 500 years that Russian threats are real. We also say that every country has an army - either its own or someone else’s. In the long run, having your own is cheaper,' he added.

Poland's top diplomat noted that US President Donald Trump had been right to highlight that many NATO members were falling short of previous commitments. He said that since then, non-US allies have significantly increased military spending.

Sikorski argued that if European countries and Canada reach the targets currently under discussion, they will match the United States in military capability - giving them the ability to independently deter threats from Russia.

While in the Netherlands, the Polish foreign minister also met with his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha. The diplomats discussed how to coordinate pressure on Russia, deepen defence cooperation, and accelerate Ukraine’s path to joining the EU and NATO.

The head of Polish diplomacy told reporters that Ukraine’s resistance had bought valuable time for the West - and urged that it not be wasted.
