European Council President António Costa has congratulated Poland for what he called a successful six-month term leading the EU Council, highlighting progress on defence and economic competitiveness.

“Dear Donald Tusk,” he addressed the head of the Polish government via social media.

“You have just concluded a successful Council presidency delivering on key files.
It was a true pleasure and honour to share this first full semester in office with you. Serdeczne gratulacje!” the politician emphasised, ending his congratulations with a phrase in Polish.

Poland’s presidency marked by defence progress and business support, says Costa

Speaking to Poland’s state news agency PAP, Costa emphasised that security had been the top priority and that Warsaw had delivered on its commitments swiftly.

The politician noted that measures agreed over the six-month term would help achieve NATO’s target level of defence spending.

“Poland’s presidency will be remembered above all for supporting European defence and for launching an important debate on simplifying and reducing the administrative burden on our businesses to boost competitiveness,” Costa said.

Among the main achievements was the approval of the €150 billion SAFE loan programme to help EU member states fund defence expenditures.

Poland’s leadership also secured the endorsement of EDIP, which Costa described as “a huge programme to strengthen Europe’s defence industry.”

On 1 July, Denmark will take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.
