On Thursday, 10 July, MEPs in Strasbourg rejected the motion by 360 votes to 175, with 18 abstentions.

The initiative came largely from far-right groups and lawmakers from Poland’s populist Law and Justice (PiS) party. Its main accusation was a lack of transparency in negotiating Covid-19 vaccine contracts with Pfizer.

Other allegations included interference in Romania’s presidential elections and the creation of a €150 billion loan fund for European defence without consulting the Parliament.

While the outcome was not a surprise - supporters of the motion failed to secure the two-thirds majority required - the vote nonetheless highlighted tensions.
