The delegation included politicians from Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Germany, and Latvia. They discussed the current situation with representatives of the Nadbużański Border Guard Unit and local authorities.
Polish MEP Marta Wcisło, who is leading efforts in the European Parliament to establish a special fund for border regions, confirmed via social media that she had initiated the visit and had been advocating for it for several months.
As part of ongoing work on the new EU budget for 2028–2034, Polish MEPs are seeking additional funding for areas bordering Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine.
The head of the delegation, Bulgarian MEP Andrey Novakov, who also serves as the coordinator on the REGI Committee, said that EU funding for border protection should be increased.
The politician stressed that Romania, Poland, the Baltic states, and Finland are among the countries most affected by the consequences of the war in Ukraine, and that Europe must defend and invest in these regions. The presence of the European Parliament delegation in Sławatycze, he added, confirms that “Europe stands firmly with Poland.”
On Tuesday, the delegation’s programme includes a visit to the rail terminal in Małaszewicze and meetings with regional and local representatives in Biała Podlaska and Białystok, in eastern Poland.
