Israeli warplanes struck Gaza City on Tuesday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of violating a ceasefire deal brokered earlier this month by US President Donald Trump, news outlets reported.

The airstrikes were the latest flare-up in the fragile, three-week-old ceasefire and followed a statement from Netanyahu’s office saying he had ordered the military to carry out "powerful attacks," the Reuters news agency reported.

It cited an Israeli military official it did not name as saying that Hamas violated the ceasfire by attacking Israeli forces.

Earlier on Tuesday, Netanyahu said Hamas breached the deal by returning some wrong remains in a process of repatriating the bodies of Israeli hostages.

Hamas denied the allegations, saying it was adhering to the ceasefire terms and accusing Netanyahu of seeking excuses to avoid Israel’s commitments, according to Reuters.

The US-backed ceasefire, which took effect on October 10, halted nearly two years of war that began after Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Poland in late September said that Trump’s 20-point peace plan for the Gaza Strip was "a realistic and bold attempt" to end the two-year-old conflict between Israel and Hamas and create conditions for lasting peace in the Middle East.
