US Republican Congressman Thomas Massie has introduced a bill to withdraw the United States from NATO, calling the alliance a costly "Cold War relic" that puts the country at risk of being drawn into foreign wars.

Massie announced the measure on Tuesday, saying in a post on X: "NATO is a Cold War relic. The United States should withdraw from NATO and use that money to defend our country, not socialist countries. Today, I introduced H.R. 6508 to end our NATO membership."

Fellow Republican Anna Paulina Luna shared Massie's post and wrote: "Co-sponsoring this," broadcaster Fox News reported.

'America should not be the world's security blanket'

Massie said in a press release that "NATO was created to counter the Soviet Union, which collapsed over thirty years ago."

He argued that "U.S. participation has cost taxpayers trillions of dollars" and "continues to risk U.S. involvement in foreign wars."

"Our Constitution did not authorize permanent foreign entanglements, something our Founding Fathers explicitly warned us against," he said.

"America should not be the world’s security blanket—especially when wealthy countries refuse to pay for their own defense," he added.

Earlier this year, Republican Senator Mike Lee introduced the "Not a Trusted Organization Act," or "NATO Act," in the US Senate, according to Fox News.

Massie's bill serves as companion legislation in the House of Representatives, it said.
