The alert, posted on the embassy's social media, urges Poles in Jalisco state and the neighbouring states of Michoacán, Guanajuato, Colima, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas and Nayarit to follow local authorities' safety guidance.

The warning comes after unrest broke out following the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", one of the world's most wanted drug traffickers and cartel leaders.

He was killed in a military operation on Sunday, sparking widespread retaliatory violence, according to the Reuters news agency.

El Mencho was accused of smuggling large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl and methamphetamine into the United States.

US authorities had offered a USD 15 million reward for his capture.
