Estonia’s foreign minister said on Thursday the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran must also be viewed as Estonia’s own, pledging support for American efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Margus Tsahkna told a government press conference that Tallinn “has clearly backed Israel and the United States in every action that curbs the Iranian regime’s capabilities, not only its nuclear program but its broader military potential.”

Fresh from an official trip to Israel, Tsahkna said he “fully understood” Israeli operations. He linked Tehran to Moscow’s assault on Ukraine, noting that Iran is “one of Russia’s main allies” and that Moscow is now providing Tehran with intelligence against Washington. “This was confirmed to me by our services,” he added.

Earlier this week Estonia signaled readiness to assist U.S. naval moves to secure the Hormuz chokepoint, through which a fifth of global oil flows and which Iran has tried to block. Several larger European allies – France, Germany and Britain among them – have ruled out joining any such mission, arguing the confrontation is neither their fight nor a NATO operation.

“Estonia remains a credible partner for Washington,” Tsahkna said. Commentators noted that the Baltic nation’s military resources are modest; its navy counts three mine-hunters.
