Sikorski told Ferrer, founder of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), that Poland's post-communist transition experience "can become an inspiration for independent circles" in Cuba.
He noted that Polish economists are also supporting Cuban reformers through participation in international seminars on economic reform. The minister also recalled Poland's award of the Lech Wałęsa Solidarity Prize to Cuban dissident Berta Soler.
Ferrer, who has spent more than 20 years opposing Cuba's communist regime, was released from prison and sent to the United States at Washington's request last October, pledging upon arrival in Miami to continue his struggle. He had previously been freed in January of last year under a Vatican-brokered deal with Cuban authorities, only to be reimprisoned in April for an alleged breach of release conditions.
Poland's Foreign Ministry described Ferrer as having "paid with imprisonment and then exile" for his advocacy on behalf of Cuba's most vulnerable citizens, his calls for free elections, and his human rights work.
Ferrer is currently on a European tour that, beyond Poland, will include visits to Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom.
