Fico spoke at a ceremony commemorating the ninth-century mission of Saints Cyril and Methodius to Great Moravia. "Europe will survive only if East and West unite", he said, adding that Slovakia should serve as a link between the two.

He said the crisis within the EU stems from a "breakdown of the value system", and that confrontation and military strength have become the main driving forces in Europe today.

"We are observing that European elites are staking our common European home on a single card. And that card is confrontation and Russophobia", Fico said.

He also reaffirmed that his government will continue to withhold support for military aid to Ukraine, recalling Bratislava's opposition to an EU loan intended to fund military assistance for Kyiv. He said Slovakia would maintain the same position at the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara.
