In a video message posted on X to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, Ambassador Rose reflected on the events of August 1, 1944, when tens of thousands of Warsaw residents rose against Nazi German occupation in a bid to liberate the Polish capital.
The ambassador also drew parallels between the historic struggle for freedom and today's security challenges, emphasizing Poland's resilience throughout history.
"The lesson for those who challenge or threaten Poland today is clear: if Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin failed to conquer Poland, they will fail as well," Rose stated. "Poland may be invaded, occupied, or even conquered, but Poland never surrenders. It did not surrender then, and it will not surrender now."
Rose said the legacy of the Warsaw Uprising continues to inspire those who value freedom around the world.
"President Trump and the American people honor and remember the extraordinary sacrifice, the unwavering spirit of the Polish nation, and the heroes of the Warsaw Uprising," he said. "Their example continues to inspire all who cherish freedom and gives us the purpose and strength to continue the fight for liberty."
He concluded his remarks in Polish with the words: "Cześć bohaterom" ("Honor to the heroes").
The Warsaw Uprising began on August 1, 1944, as approximately 40,000 to 50,000 members of the Polish resistance launched an operation to liberate Warsaw from German occupation. Although initially planned to last only a few days, the uprising continued for more than two months.
The fighting claimed the lives of approximately 18,000 Polish insurgents, while another 25,000 were wounded. Around 3,500 soldiers from the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division also died after crossing the Vistula River in an effort to support the insurgents. Civilian casualties reached an estimated 180,000 people.
