In a post published on Truth Social, Trump stated that the United States had been prepared to launch what he described as a powerful attack on Iran. However, following requests from Iran and several Middle Eastern countries, Washington decided to postpone military action after what Trump called a preliminary framework for a possible peace agreement had been established.
"I agreed, for the good of the world and with the future of a prosperous Iran in mind, to cancel the attack, provided that we can reach an agreement quickly," Trump wrote.
According to the U.S. president, the proposed agreement would include the immediate and complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes, as well as the elimination of what he described as Iran's nuclear threat.
Trump also said that Israel supports the proposed arrangement, adding that the country "joins me in this commitment."
The announcement came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Earlier on Saturday, the U.S. administration warned American citizens in the region to prepare for further escalation. Media reports had speculated that the United States and Israel could launch one of the largest attacks to date against Iran's energy infrastructure over the weekend.
Iran, meanwhile, warned that it would retaliate against any new military action.
