Zalewski said the funds would be transferred to the Armed Forces Support Fund and could be used exclusively to modernise the Polish armed forces, in accordance with the statute.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Poland is set to receive more than EUR 1 billion from the European Peace Facility, according to Zalewski.
The EPF is funded by contributions from EU member states and has been used to reimburse European governments for weapons and other military support provided to Ukraine.
Part of the fund had been blocked for several years by Hungary under the government of Viktor Orbán.
After former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán left office, Hungary’s new authorities lifted the veto, but EU countries still had to agree on how to distribute the released funds.
From the newly released funds, Poland will receive almost EUR 270 million, although the Polish government had initially expected around EUR 500 million.
