“I want to say very clearly: our intelligence does not see a threat of a Russian invasion”, Stoere told Poland’s Rzeczpospolita daily, while acknowledging that societies face serious risks ranging from extreme weather to technological upheaval and security challenges.

He said NATO was too powerful a military alliance for anyone to risk attacking, and that “no one in their right mind will decide to attack” it.

Asked whether Norway might join the EU, Stoere said Oslo had no such plans at present, pointing to its ties to the bloc through the European Economic Area.

“We take part in many EU programmes, not only economic but also defence ones. We also support them financially. We also support Poland”, he said.
