The decoration, the Gold Cross of Honour, was bestowed on Mika by the German ambassador to Poland, Arndt Freytag von Loringhoven, during a ceremony in Warsaw this week.

The top Polish military man was honoured for contributing to the development of Polish-German military cooperation, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

The German Gold Cross of Honour is awarded to soldiers and civilians, both German citizens and foreign nationals, who have rendered outstanding service to the country's armed forces.

The award was established in 1980 by the German defence minister at the time, Hans Apel.
