Mateusz Morawiecki made the remark to reporters ahead of the second day of the EU summit in the Belgian capital, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
EU defence policy
Morawiecki said: “I have to note with great satisfaction that the summit’s expanded conclusions recognise the role of NATO.”
He added: “It is very important for all aspects of EU defence policy to be part of NATO, the strongest military alliance in the history of the world, and we have managed to include this in the European Council’s conclusions."
Food security
Food security was set to be another key focus of the second day of the summit, according to Morawiecki.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has raised the prospect of hunger in countries that previously relied on food imports from these two countries, experts have warned.
Morawiecki told reporters: “Yesterday I outlined Poland’s capabilities. I briefed the meeting on how much Poland is already doing to boost grain exports from Ukraine and how much more we can do, especially with the support of our European partners.”
'Nobody wants to buy energy from Russia'
On Tuesday, EU leaders were also expected to discuss energy.
A day earlier, the summit agreed to put an embargo on most Russian oil imports over the Kremlin’s assault on Ukraine.
The Polish prime minister commented: “Nobody wants to buy energy from Russia.”
Calling Russia “a barbaric country” and “a criminal state,” Morawiecki said that EU members were looking to end their reliance on Russian oil and coal as soon as possible and, in the longer term, also stop using Russian gas.
Tuesday is day 97 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
