The move came after Ambassador Sebastian Kęciek was recalled from Budapest to Warsaw late last year amid a diplomatic spat.
On Thursday, Polish foreign ministry spokesman Paweł Wroński confirmed the latest decision, marking a downgrade in Poland’s diplomatic representation in Hungary.
A day earlier, Hungarian Deputy Foreign Minister Levente Magyar described Poland’s move as “unfortunate” and “unprecedented” in the history of Central European relations, according to reports.
"This unfortunate step is the result of a gradual deterioration in our political ties -- an unprecedented move in the history of our relations with any Central European partner," Magyar said, as quoted by the euractiv.com news service.
"Nevertheless, we consider this a temporary situation," he added. "Despite the current political disagreements, we remain open to dialogue and are hopeful that better times will come again for the alliance between our two countries."

The Polish foreign ministry noted that Kęciek was recalled in December from Budapest to Warsaw for "indefinite consultations" after Hungary granted political asylum to a former Polish deputy justice minister facing corruption charges.
