The United States has accepted three key European demands on Ukraine - shaped with input from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk - ahead of Friday’s planned summit in Alaska between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki has said.

Speaking to public broadcaster Polskie Radio on Thursday, Bosacki described the statements from Washington as “reassuring” and said three rounds of preparatory talks between US and European leaders had left him more optimistic about America’s stance. He added that the positions had been agreed with the involvement of Tusk and other European leaders.

“First, there will be no peace framework or even a ceasefire agreed over the heads of the Ukrainians. Second, any decisions about Ukraine’s territory must involve President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump said he would not make such decisions in talks with Putin,” Bosacki said, adding that US Vice President JD Vance had echoed these assurances.

Bosacki welcomed the “demonstrated unity” among the allies but cautioned against expecting a breakthrough in Alaska. “I am not optimistic that there will be a quick ceasefire. Putin is pursuing all his objectives. He believes Ukraine is on its last legs militarily. We must prove him wrong,” he said.

The Polish diplomat also warned against rewarding Russian aggression. Moscow should not gain political or strategic benefits - such as guarantees that Ukraine will never join NATO or the EU - in exchange for ending the war. “The aggressor cannot be rewarded for killing hundreds of thousands of people,” he said.

The statements follow an online meeting of European leaders on Wednesday 13 August, which included German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. US President Donald Trump also took part in the discussion.

On Friday 15 August, Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. The two leaders are expected to hold private talks, with logistical details, including the possibility of a joint press conference, still being finalised.
