Defense Secretary John Healey told the BBC on Sunday that steps are under way to revoke Andrew’s Royal Navy vice-admiral title.
He added no decision has been made on the former duke’s service medals, and said the government generally follows the king’s judgments.
The announcement follows the king’s move on Thursday to take back the Duke of York title and other royal privileges after months of pressure.
The decision came shortly after the posthumous memoirs of Virginia Giuffre, who says she was forced into sexual encounters with Andrew at 17. He has always denied wrongdoing.
Andrew retained the vice-admiral rank after giving up other military roles in 2022, when Giuffre filed a civil suit in New York. He served more than two decades in the Royal Navy, including as a helicopter pilot in the 1982 Falklands war.
The Guardian reported his only current income is an estimated £20,000 annual military pension. The paper also said the king approved a one-off six-figure payment and is prepared to fund yearly support to curb future overspending.
British media said that despite the immediate loss of royal styles, Andrew is unlikely to leave the Royal Lodge before Christmas, a home he long shared with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. He is expected to move to Sandringham House, the family’s traditional Christmas gathering place.
