During a session in Brussels on Thursday, November 13, MEPs voted to strip Braun of legal protection following the recommendation of the European Parliament’s legal committee.
The decision concerns allegations of assaulting a gynecologist in Oleśnica, southwestern Poland, and inciting religious hatred. MEPs reportedly raised no objections during Thursday’s vote in Brussels.
Płomecka noted that Braun previously lost his immunity in May 2025 in connection with separate charges, including extinguishing Hanukkah candles in the Polish parliament.
Under European Parliament rules, each new allegation requires a separate request from prosecutors, meaning the procedure must restart each time. So far, four such requests concerning Braun have been submitted, making him one of the few MEPs repeatedly subjected to the process.
Braun, leader of the far-right Confederation of the Polish Crown, has been a polarizing figure in Polish politics, known for a series of provocative actions.
Prosecutors allege that in the Oleśnica case, the politician attempted to detain a gynecologist who had performed a medically justified late-term abortion, claiming he was conducting a “citizen’s arrest.”
Other Polish MEPs who have lost immunity during the current parliamentary term include politicians from the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS): Adam Bielan, Maciej Wąsik, Mariusz Kamiński, Daniel Obajtek, and Michał Dworczyk.
