Growing tensions in Poland between pro-EU government and anti-EU president

The list of disputes between Poland’s centrist-liberal, pro-European government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Karol Nawrocki, backed by the right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) party, continues to grow.
Poland is witnessing escalating tensions as Prime Minister Donald Tusks pro-EU government clashes with President Karol Nawrocki (seen on the right) over his record use of vetos, anti-EU rhetoric and actions perceived as exceeding his constitutional powers, prompting public protests.

“Under the Constitution, the government conducts foreign policy. The president is obliged to cooperate with the government and represent Poland with dignity. We must all adhere to this principle at all times. It is better for Poland,” Tusk said on Sunday, responding to Nawrocki’s call for consultation on draft legislation.

The prime minister explained to the president the workings of Poland’s political system and why his actions are generating increasing opposition.

Dispute over Poland’s president and EU policy

Andrzej Szejna, a left-wing politician, told Polish Radio that the president’s decisions should be subject to administrative oversight.

He argued that Nawrocki exceeded his powers, including by refusing to sign military promotions and awards, even for individuals tasked with countering hostile foreign activities in Poland.

Prime Minister Tusk has previously described Nawrocki’s actions as “sabotage targeting Poland’s national security.”

The President’s Office has rejected these claims, insisting that the head of state is acting within the law.

Nawrocki also faced widespread criticism for his anti-EU speech at Charles University in Prague during his official visit to the Czech Republic.

Over the past weekend, before Nawrocki announced he would cancel a planned meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a protest was held outside Belweder Palace in Warsaw against the president’s recent actions.

Nawrocki has already entered Polish history for vetoing a record number of bills in a remarkably short period since taking office in August.

The demonstration was supported by prominent figures including actress Joanna Szczepkowska, known for her long-standing advocacy for democratic standards in Poland.
