UPDATE: EU Parliament clash over Hungary sheltering PiS politician accused of large-scale fraud

Romanowski fled to Hungary, where he is now being sheltered by Viktor Orbán’s Kremlin-friendly administration.

The review will focus on the legality of the Hungarian government’s decision to grant him political asylum.

The move was approved by coordinators of the Parliament’s political groups following a request from Polish MEP Dariusz Joński.

Joński told Polish Radio’s Brussels correspondent Beata Płomecka that the matter will be taken up during the January session of the Parliament’s petitions committee.

Romanowski is suspected of involvement in an organised criminal group accused of embezzling money from Poland’s Justice Fund - a programme intended to support crime victims but which, according to investigators, was systematically misused under the previous PiS government.

Prosecutors allege that more than 107 million złoty (approximately €25 million) was unlawfully appropriated.

In his request for an urgent debate, Joński argued that granting Romanowski asylum and refusing to surrender him to Poland undermines the EU’s shared legal framework.

He warned that the situation creates a precedent in which one EU member state shields an individual suspected of serious crimes against the public interest in another.

Joński described the decision as an abuse of the asylum mechanism and a breach of European solidarity, noting that under the principles of mutual trust and mutual recognition of judicial decisions, EU countries are obliged to assist one another in criminal matters, including executing European Arrest Warrants.

Allegations against Romanowski

Prosecutors accuse Marcin Romanowski of taking part in an organised criminal group, corruption, financial misconduct and abuse of power in connection with widespread irregularities in the management of the Justice Fund.

A Polish court issued a temporary arrest order and a European Arrest Warrant for him in December 2024.

Hungary’s decision to grant him political asylum has blocked his extradition and raised concerns about a breach of EU principles on judicial cooperation and mutual trust.
