"I’m seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States," Trump told world leaders gathered at the Swiss mountain resort.

Trump said the United States was uniquely capable of securing Greenland and told the gathering that his push for the minerals-rich island was not driven by access to rare earth minerals.

'All US is asking for is a place called Greenland'

"People thought I would use force. I don’t have to use force. I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force,” Trump said. “All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland."

He described Greenland as "a large piece of ice in the middle of the ocean."

He said he wants full US ownership of Greenland.

“All we’re asking for is to get Greenland, including right title and ownership, because you need the ownership to defend it,” he said. “You can’t defend it on a lease."

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, a NATO ally of the United States.
